Doja Cat is standing her ground when it comes to her place in rap. The Grammy-winning artist recently found herself in a debate on X, formerly known as Twitter, after a fan questioned whether her music should even be part of Hip-Hop conversations.
The fan, who claimed to be a supporter, suggested that her upcoming work should be left out of discussions about female rap. They argued that without a strong focus on lyrical elements like punchlines, storytelling, and wordplay, she could not be taken seriously as a rapper. To prove their point, they dared others to share their favorite Doja Cat lyric, predicting no one would come up with one worth mentioning.
Doja responded directly, telling them, “You don’t listen to or read enough of my writing to be able to make this claim. I’m alright at what I do and sometimes I’m incredible. Please stop trying to downplay my ability it feels like you’re doling out criticism with no constructiveness based on something that’s deeper than just the topic of music.” She encouraged the person to fully engage with her music before forming an opinion, saying, “You have to give me a chance if you’re going to make criticisms about the entirety of my raps. You have to listen. You have to read.”
She added that she should not have to break down her work into a simplified version for them to understand what many fans recognize as strong rap skills, closing with, “You aren’t stupid. Listen to my music.”
When the fan named JAY-Z, Rakim, and Jeezy as examples of true lyricists, Doja replied respectfully, calling them great writers and thanking the fan for sharing their taste. She made it clear that even if someone cannot connect with her verses, she respects their opinion while remaining confident in her own artistry.
