Eddie Murphy’s 2007 film, Norbit, was met with an onslaught of criticism; however, he feels that some of it was a bit exaggerated. According to him, a lot of the negative commentary was fueled by people “hating” on him. “I love Norbit,” he tells Speedy Morman on the latest episode of 360 With Speedy.
Norbit, which he co-wrote with his late brother, Charlie Murphy, was released right after he’d received an Oscar nomination for Dreamgirls. Many film critics questioned the validity of Murphy’s acting skills, almost suggesting that his nomination may not have been deserved.
On the other hand, Murphy is unbothered by the negative commentary and is proud he wrote the movie alongside his brother, saying, “…We think ‘Norbit’ is funny.” Murphy had stopped by the show to discuss his comedic legacy, life, and legendary movie career. While the pair trekked through his career highs, they also made light of some of the comedian’s “worst films.”
He also addressed his infamous Razzie nominations for Worst Actor, Actress, and Actor of the Decade. “I was like, ‘Come on now, that sh*t ain’t that bad,” he says. “They was just hating on a n*gga.”
“My Legacy Is My Children, ” Eddie Murphy Says
Later in the interview, Morman asked Murphy to describe what legacy means to him, in terms of his career. For the actor and comedian, his legacy is his children.
“Like, this what I do to make a living. It’s not my legacy,” he says. “My legacy is …that I produced these wonderful, ya know, well-balanced, human beings.” He added, “All my kids are really good people, and that’s my legacy. I got these great kids that I produced.”
Eddie Murphy is a father to ten children, one of whom (Eric), he shares with his former girlfriend, Paulette McNeely, and the other (Christian), he shares with another ex-girlfriend, Tamara Hood. With his ex-wife, Nicole, he shares five children (Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola, and Bella). He has one child (Angel) with Spice Girls singer, Mel B, and two others (Izzy and Max) with his current wife, Australian model Paige Butcher.
