Highest Midterm Elections show out

More than 116 million ballots were cast this midterm election. This year was the highest voter turn out for any midterm election in a century.

The Democrats won the House majority. They needed 23 House seats to win.

The most minorities and women elected into office

Women were elected at historic levels for the midterm election. For the first time, Native American, African-American, and Muslim women won seats in the House. 40 women of color will be in the House, Tennessee elected their first female senator, and South Dakota and Maine elected their first female governor.

California Wildfires

Deadly wildfires swept through California, making them the most destructive in the state's history. The Camp Fire destroyed more than 19,000 buildings which were mostly homes.

2,975 becomes the official death toll in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria

Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. It wasn't until nearly a year later in August that the official death toll was released. The Category 4 hurricane caused severe damage and left people without power for months.

Mass shootings this year

Sadly, this year, schools experienced a record number of gun violence. 55 people including the shooter were killed in school gun violence.

Lesandro Guzman-Feliz murdered in the Bronx

The gang-related killing of 15-year-old Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz sparked national attention. Celebrities like Cardi B. and Lala, as well as our very own Lisa Evers, host of 'Street Soldiers', spoke with Junior's mom about getting justice for the horrific tragedy. 14 murder suspects are in custody.

When Kim Kardashian learned that Alice Johnson was serving 22-years in prison on federal drug/money laundering charges, she made it her mission to ger her released. Kim met with Donald Trump and he gave Alice clemency.

Trump said that he "likes" North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after months of them threating to drop nuclear bombs. Trump and South Korean leader Moon Jae-in sign trade deal.

The Trump administration implemented a policy that separated immigrant families at the border. Many children were sent to "camps" that were like detention centers.

Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen get 3 years in jail

President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for making secret payments to women who claimed they had affairs with Trump, lying to Congress about the president’s business dealings with Russia and failing to report millions of dollars in income.

Stormy Daniels

Adult film star Stormy Daniels alleged that in 2006 she had a one-night stand with President Donald Trump.


Many arrests and indictments in Russia investigation

Twelve Russian intelligence officers were indicted by a federal grand jury on July 13th. They were accused of hacking Democratic Party computer networks in 2016.

Nia Wilson

On July 22, 2018, three African-American sisters, Nia, Letifah and Tashiya Wilson, were attacked by a white man with a knife after exiting a Bay Area Rapid Transit train at MacArthur station in Oakland, California. 18-year-old Nia Wilson died after her throat was slashed.

Government Shutdown

This year, there have been three United States federal government shutdowns. One happened in January, February, and recently this month in December. It's been about a week since the partial government shutdown happened over a standoff with Democrats over border wall funding.
