G Herbo is reeling after a devastating mass shooting rocked the Chicago music scene earlier this month. Although the rapper didn’t attend Mello Buckzz’s album release celebration on July 2nd, he’s been emotionally impacted by the tragedy that unfolded during the event. “I’m feeling the PTSD!!!” he told TMZ Hip Hop while in New York City this week.
The party, held in the River North section of Chicago, ended in horror when a Black SUV pulled up outside the venue and unleashed gunfire. Four lives were lost, including Mello’s boyfriend and three of her close friends. Fourteen more were seriously injured. Authorities are still investigating and searching for those responsible. In response, the city has shut down the lounge where the shooting occurred.
Herbo, a longtime friend of Mello’s, contributed a verse to her latest drill project Hollyhood, appearing on the second track. Though he wasn’t there that night, the loss has hit close to home. “The only thing the city can do is stay strong for Mello,” he said, recognizing the depth of her grief.
In the midst of all this, Herbo’s name continues to make noise in the industry. His single “Went Legit” has been heating up this summer, recently getting an extra boost thanks to comedian Druski’s viral antics. He also features on Rob49’s buzzing remix of “WTHELLY,” which has been gaining serious traction.
Still, the weight of what happened in his hometown hangs over him. As the community mourns and seeks justice, Herbo is focused on supporting Mello through one of the most difficult moments of her life—offering strength in a time when it’s needed most.
