Jeezy’s early success in rap can be attributed to Big Meech and Southwest T and the Black Mafia Family (BMF).

At the peak of their popularity in 2000s Atlanta, the criminal organization made Young Jeezy’s early music their soundtrack as they took over the city’s strip club scene. Jeezy and Southwest T made a surprise reunion 20 years later over the weekend in Detroit.

A clip surfaced on Saturday, showing Jeezy and Southwest T, born Terry Flenory, greeting each other at a local basketball game. It would be the first time the two have seen each other since the BMF indictment in the early 2000s. Jeezy and T were all smiles as they shook hands while the “Sole Survivor” hitmaker was escorted to his seat in the gymnasium.

The clip of Jeezy and T had fans curious about whether the rap legend would have the same interaction with now-released Big Meech. For years, there have been rumors that Big Meech, born Demetrious Flenory, and Jeezy have been embroiled in a beef. It allegedly stems from the rapper not signing with BMF’s record label in the 2000s.

In the early 2000s, BMF loomed large in both the drug trade and Atlanta’s burgeoning rap scene, pouring money and influence into music, image, and nightlife.

For Jeezy, his early days with BMF have transitioned over 20 years and made the rap star a completely new man. He is no longer Jizzle from the bottom of the map; he is a successful entrepreneur, legend, and author.

Though he never signed with BMF, his proximity to Big Meech and Southwest T symbolized authenticity in a culture. The crew’s extravagant lifestyle—stretching from fleets of luxury cars to star-studded parties—reflected the same ambition and survival. Jeezy would capture on his 2005 debut, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101.

Southwest T maintained particularly close ties with Jeezy until his prison sentence in 2005. Big Meech became BMF’s public face. Their co-sign boosted Jeezy’s image, helping him bridge the streets and the mainstream at a crucial point in his career.

Both sides played a big part in Jeezy’s debut album. It has become one of the most influential rap albums of the 2000s. Thug Motivation: 101‘s 20th anniversary has seen newfound success with a tour and orchestrated re-release.
