John Legend is marking two decades since his debut album “Get Lifted” by exploring new creative avenues. On August 30, the R&B-pop star is set to release his first children’s album, “My Favorite Dream,” under Republic Records: Kids & Family. This album, produced by the versatile Sufjan Stevens, is rich in sound and focuses on universal themes such as love, safety, family, and dreams. It includes nine original songs, two covers, a solo piano track, and three bonus Fisher-Price covers.
As a father of four—Luna, 8; Miles, 6; and toddlers Esti and Wren—Legend wanted to create music that resonates with both children and adults. “I wanted the parents to like it,” Legend told The Associated Press. “I wanted the same standard of quality and musicianship that I would want on any of my records.” The goal was to ensure the album could stand on its own, appealing to listeners of all ages.
Republic Records: Kids & Family’s senior VP, Bree Bowles, praised the album, saying, “To craft a children’s album with depth and artistry, while making it bright and warm for little ones, is a true skill. There’s an authenticity that makes you feel part of his world and family.”
Legend explained how the idea for the album began. While playing “Maybe” from a Fisher-Price play mat for his daughter Esti, his wife Chrissy Teigen posted a video of him on Instagram. The response was overwhelming, with fans urging him to create more children’s music. Accepting the challenge, Legend wrote nine new songs, crafting an album that reflects the lessons he shares with his kids.
The lead single, “L-O-V-E,” features his wife and two children, Luna and Miles, making it an intimate family project that embodies Legend’s philosophy of spreading love and empathy through music.
