Kanye West has been embroiled in controversy for most of his career, but none is more evident than the past few years. Recently, the disgraced mogul and rapper was accused of discriminating against several former Black employees he worked with.
According to court documents acquired by Page Six, on Friday (April 26), a former security guard at West’s Donda Academy named Benjamin Deshon Provo filed a lawsuit claiming that he suffered “severe emotional distress” during his tenure at the rapper’s school.
The documents also allege that West and members of his management team gave preferential treatment to white employees. “Specifically, Kanye frequently screamed at and berated black employees, while in contrast, he never so much as raised his tone of voice toward white staff,” the lawsuit read.
Provo also stated that West would often humiliate his Black employees’ hairstyle choices, especially locs, which Provo was sporting at the time. In addition to that, the complaint claimed that West did this because of Provo’s Muslim faith. Eventually, he was forced to cut his hair or face termination.
“Kanye and members of his management team required Provo to choose between these critical aspects of his self-identity and financial stability,” the documents read. “Indeed, at the direction of Kanye, Provo was given the ultimatum, cut his hair, or be fired.”
Provo’s claims didn’t end there, the former security also revealed that West would ban books from iconic civil rights leaders like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.
