Kanye West Wireless Fest: Pepsi Withdraws Sponsorship Amid Backlash

Pepsi is reportedly withdrawing its financial support of London’s Wireless Festival, where Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, is expected to headline this year. The decision appears to have been influenced by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s criticism of the event. In recent years, West has drawn the ire of many for his anti-Semitic remarks. He has also received criticism for his vocal support of Adolf Hitler. Starmer slammed the festival, which is owned and managed by Live Nation, calling the situation “deeply concerning.”

“It is deeply concerning Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism,” Starmer told The Sun in a statement. “Antisemitism in any form is abhorrent and must be confronted firmly wherever it appears. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure Britain is a place where Jewish people feel safe.” PepsiCo, which is the parent company of the popular beverage, has yet to issue a statement regarding the decision.

Ye Apologizes For Past Anti-Semitic Remarks

Earlier this year, Ye placed a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal, seeking forgiveness for his past anti-semitic remarks. “I lost touch with reality. Things got worse the longer I ignored the problem. I said and did things I deeply regret. Some of the people I love the most, I treated the worst,” he said. “You endured fear, confusion, humiliation, and the exhaustion of trying to have someone who was, at times, unrecognizable. Looking back, I became detached from my true self.”

Ye continued: “In that fractured state, I gravitated toward the most destructive symbol I could find, the swastika, and even sold t-shirts bearing it. One of the difficult aspects of having bipolar type-1 are the disconnected moments – many of which I still cannot recall – that led to poor judgment and reckless behavior that oftentimes feels like an out-of-body experience. I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state, and am committed to accountability, treatment, and meaningful change.”
