Kehlani is speaking out after a viral video showing her dancing with rapper Ice Spice at a nightclub sparked mixed reactions online. The clip, which surfaced earlier this week, quickly spread across social media, with some fans celebrating the playful moment and others speculating about the singers’ relationship.
On October 14, the Grammy-nominated artist addressed the controversy in a candid Instagram Story, pushing back against what she described as unfair double standards faced by queer women. The 29-year-old expressed frustration over how her actions are often sexualized or misinterpreted simply because she identifies as gay.
“You know what’s so messed up about being one of the few famous gay girls for real, is like… y’all think everything I do is gay,” she said. “When straight girls go out and kick it with their homegirls and do homegirl drunk stuff in the club, it’s not gay. Y’all be drunk, making out in the club, and still call yourselves straight, and it’s fine.”

Kehlani went on to explain how similar behavior is viewed differently when it involves someone from the LGBTQ+ community. “I, as a gay person, dance with a woman, and all of a sudden, I’m trying to hook up, I’m trying to hit that,” she said. “It creates this weird stereotype that gay people are predatory, which is wrong.”
Her remarks resonated with fans and fellow artists, many of whom applauded her for calling out the stigma queer people still face in social spaces. The “Nights Like This” singer has long been an advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility, using her platform to promote authenticity and challenge misconceptions about queer identity.
By addressing the backlash directly, Kehlani emphasized the importance of allowing queer individuals to exist freely without constant judgment or assumptions. Her message, both vulnerable and assertive, reminded followers that joy, friendship, and self-expression shouldn’t be policed — regardless of sexuality.
