Larry Hoover Jr. is showing major gratitude to Ye for his years of support in pushing for his father’s release. On Wednesday, May 28th, former President Donald Trump commuted the federal life sentence of Larry Hoover Sr., founder of the Gangster Disciples, who has been incarcerated since 1973.
“It started a long time ago with Kanye. Kanye put us on the platform,” Hoover Jr. told TMZ. “[Ye] had a very big part because he started it all off. He put us on the platform. He took us to the White House on his platform when he didn’t have to do that.”
Ye began championing Hoover’s case during his 2018 Oval Office meeting with Trump and later co-headlined the Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert with Drake in 2021. “[Ye] stuck his neck out there. We know he don’t have a problem with sticking his neck out there about what he believes in, and I’m glad he believed in this,” Hoover Jr. added.
Ye’s advocacy extended to giving Hoover Jr. airtime during a Drink Champs interview and featuring him on the Donda album. Hoover Sr.’s name also appeared on Ye tracks like “Jesus Lord” and “River” from Vultures 2.
Reacting to the news, Ye took to X (formerly Twitter), writing: “WORDS CAN’T EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR OUR DEVOTED ENDURING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP FOR FREEING LARRY HOOVER.”
While Hoover’s federal sentence has been commuted, he’s not walking free yet. The 74-year-old still faces a 200-year sentence in Illinois related to the 1973 murder of drug dealer William “Pooky” Young.
Trump’s commutation was part of a broader wave of pardons, which also included rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
