Nick Cannon is opening up about the personal struggles that shaped his path to fatherhood. The entertainer and television host, who has 12 children with six different women, recently revealed that his decision to expand his family so significantly was deeply connected to unhealed trauma.
During a recent interview, Cannon explained that the years following his divorce from Mariah Carey were marked by emotional pain that influenced many of his choices. He admitted that having a large number of children was less about a clear plan and more about how he coped with difficult experiences.

“I was careless,” Cannon confessed, “I was frivolous with my process because I had the access and ability to do whatever I wanted. I wasn’t taking the time to heal. If I had done the inner work, I probably would’ve made different decisions.”
While reflecting on his past, Cannon emphasized that his children were not “mistakes” and each came from genuine love and meaningful relationships. Still, he acknowledged that unresolved grief and trauma played a major role in how his family grew so quickly.
The Wild ‘N Out creator also shared that therapy — both individually and with his children and their mothers — has become an important part of his journey. He said counseling helps him navigate a “non-traditional” family structure while trying to ensure that all of his children feel supported.
