Sexxy Red has recently opened up about her experience with postpartum depression while creating one of her most popular tracks. Her hit song, “Get It Sexxy” has been all over the charts, and recently went gold. However, the story behind the track isn’t as illuminating. The St. Louis native revealed while creating the track she was battling with postpartum depression.
The rapper jumped on Instagram to share her harrowing story with her fans. “The night get it sexyy was made I was goin thru a lot just had my baby felt depressed and was goin thru postpartum…” she began. “my team in Miami would leave me in the studio to write songs & I would just b in there crying thinkin about life…” Sexxy decided there was only one remedy: family. The rapper says she returned to St.Louis to be around her loved ones. While there, she got her spark back.
Postpartum Depression affects at least one in seven women, according to the National Institutes of Health.
“I finally said send me back to St. Louis so I can b around the ones I love and get back to me,” she continued. “Boom I’m in St. Louis I invite all my sisters and friends to my studio session we had blunts, bottles, food allet.” Sexxy Red admits working on the track, surrounded by family, was the best “confidence booster.” Sexxy adds, “we was so turnt all my sadness was gone I love my family period [heart emoji] [blood drop emoji] ps… I was monain in the song cause my h0 was behind me humpin me while I was recording [laugh emoji] [laugh emoji].”
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), at least one in seven women can develop postpartum depression (PPD). “While women experiencing baby blues tend to recover quickly, PPD tends to last longer,” the website reads. “And severely affects women’s ability to return to normal function. PPD affects the mother and her relationship with the infant. Maternal brain response and behavior are compromised in PPD.”
