SZA has sent shockwaves through the music world with her recent announcement that she is planning her retirement after completing her next two albums. On January 4th, the SOS singer revealed her desire to pivot away from the music industry after fulfilling her current contract, expressing a desire to create “peaceful children’s music” and ultimately leave the scene. “To fulfill my last 2 album requirements I think I just wanna make peaceful children’s music n get outta here,” SZA shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Then go be a farmer n donate the produce to underserved communities.”
The announcement of SZA’s potential retirement came as a surprise to many, especially considering the ongoing success of her sophomore album SOS. Released in 2022, the album recently returned to the top of the Billboard 200 following the release of its deluxe version, Lana, in December. SOS has now spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks at number one, remaining in the top 20 ever since its debut, a major achievement for the artist. In its first week of the deluxe version’s release, SOS shifted 178,000 equivalent album units, with Lana contributing 105,000 of those units, beating out other major releases, including Michael Bublé’s Christmas album.
Reflecting on an exceptional year and hinting at her retirement plans, SZA expressed deep gratitude for the support she’s received. On Instagram Stories, she shared a heartfelt message, thanking her fans for their love and acknowledging her accomplishments. “If it wasn’t for God’s favor over my life this year boyyy. My parents are healthy. won 3 Grammys. went number one again. Sang on Sesame Street. Shot a movie. Shot a vogue cover. Toured the world. Got a songwriters hall of fame award. WHO JAH BLESS NO MAN CURSE!! NO MAN!!! AMEN,” she posted.
