Teyana Taylor says stepping into the role of Dionne Warwick is far more than just another job. While chatting with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, she confirmed that she is still preparing to portray the music legend in an upcoming biopic.

The project has been in discussion for years. Fans first learned about it in 2020. That year, Warwick took to X to endorse Taylor as the only choice to play her. At the time, Warwick posted, “Please don’t ask who I would cast to play me as it would obviously be @TEYANATAYLOR.” Netflix replied with “taking notes,” which instantly set off conversations about a possible series.

Taylor recalled the early days of the casting, crediting Warwick directly for making it happen. “She found me on Twitter and was like, ‘That’s my twin,’” Taylor explained. “Then she literally made a tweet to Netflix and said, ‘When y’all ready, nobody else is playing me.’”

Fans are eager for the film to begin production, but Taylor stressed that the team is taking their time to do it right. “Yes, it is happening, but we want to get the script perfect,” she said. “I’m very protective of Miss Dionne. She’s got a lot of career and a lot of legacy that I want to make sure is done right. It’s kind of like, how do you put those many decades into a two-hour movie?”

Warwick’s impact stretches across music, activism, and global influence, which Taylor admits is a challenge to capture. She doubled down by saying, “Like I said, I’m very protective of her, so I want to make sure this is all perfect.”

Taylor announced her music retirement in 2020. Since then, she has leaned into directing, acting, and producing through her company, The Aunties Production. This shift has set the stage for her next big role.
