Loaded Lux Talks Funk Flex Freestyle and Importance of Healthy Lifestyle [VIDEO]
How does one of the best battle rappers of all time gain the strength to create innovative bars for nearly twenty years? A kale and spinach infused smoothie from Juice Press. In between sips of the green concoction, Loaded Lux discussed with Jameer Pond his epic battles, Funk Flex freestyle, and his strict dietary regiment.
When discussing how to be great in his craft Lux shared, “A core root of that is rooted in my health. How well I keep myself from day-to-day. My diet plan…I’m driven by that.”
In the mid 2000s, Lux debuted on BET’s 106 & Park freestyle Fridays. He remained undefeated for 7 weeks and was eventually inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2007. After a 6-year hiatus, Lux returned to the battle scene in 2012. Fitted in a suit with a red boutonniere, Lux took URL’s Summer Madness Stage 2 for a battle against Calicoe. After a three-minute first verse, Lux says, “He about to get this work,” which has become a motto of his and a testament to his work ethic. To the surprise of the crowd and Calicoe, Lux went on for an additional three minutes. Lux’s ability to manipulate words, combined with his cadence and audience control solidified his legendary status.
“When I battle formidable opponents I look at the level they drove me to become. I always remember who I was. I appreciate everyone I battle because ya’ll brought me to spaces of myself which I never knew,” Lux shared.
This past year Lux was voted #2 on Funk Flex’s Top Ten Freestyles. “Loaded Lux was tough. This was it,” Flex said reliving the moment.
Lux reflected on that moment and how it elevated his career. “When I look at the comments…it was reading people and breaking down the lines. I take great pride in that because that’s what a lot of time in the think tank is for. What a healthy mind will do…it allows you to go places and put them layers on layers.”
Although Lux touts the nutritional benefits of a Juice Press smoothie, his essence is rooted in the spirit of Harlem and his indelible nature.
