Many people know Ty Dolla $ign’s name, though only for his popular singles like “Paranoid,” “Or Nah” and Fifth Harmony’s “Work.” To the casual listener, they may think he’s just another rapper with a harmony, but he’s actually never rapped a bar in his life – and he’s a VERY talented musician who can play nearly every instrument.
Sitting down with VICE at his home for their “Autobiographies” series, the Los Angeles singer opened up about his love for music, dating back to his childhood – as his father was a member of the 80s funk band, Lakeside. Ty explains how he learned how to play all of the instruments he plays, the equipment he uses to produce and more. The tone takes a turn when the topic comes to his younger brother and debut album’s namesake, TC, however.
TC has been incarcerated for years on a life-long bid, for what Ty says is a murder he did not commit. “Me and my brother would always talk about how we were gonna do it,” Ty says. “All this fun shit going on for me, all these women, nice cars, nice home, all this shit… But my brother’s not here with me, so I’m not really having as much fun as some of these other artists.”
