A Phoenix WNBA game turned chaotic on Monday night when an 18-year-old fan was arrested for throwing a sex toy into the crowd — the latest in a disturbing trend of similar incidents this season.
According to reports, Kaden Lopez was taken into custody during the Phoenix Mercury’s August 5 matchup against the Connecticut Sun at PHX Arena after allegedly throwing a green sex toy that struck a man and his 9-year-old niece in the stands. Though the object never reached the court, the act quickly drew attention from nearby spectators and security.
Lopez reportedly told authorities that the stunt was part of a “stupid prank that was trending on social media.” He now faces charges including disorderly conduct, assault, and public display of explicit sexual material. A court filing also revealed that a volunteer tackled Lopez as he tried to flee the scene, preventing further disruption.
The incident adds to a troubling series of similar episodes that have plagued the WNBA in recent weeks. This marks at least the fifth reported case of sex toys being thrown at or near the court, with previous incidents occurring in Atlanta (July 29), Chicago (August 1), Los Angeles (earlier on August 5) — where Mercury player Sophie Cunningham was nearly hit — and New York.
Both the WNBA and arena officials have issued stern warnings in response, reiterating a zero-tolerance policy for such behavior. Individuals caught throwing objects face immediate ejection, a minimum one-year ban, and potential criminal charges. In an effort to curb further disruptions, venues have also introduced new security protocols, including stricter no-bag policies.
Fans and players alike have voiced frustration over the escalating behavior, urging respect for the league and its athletes.
