The Inwood community and rapper Cardi B are mourning the loss of two pedestrians killed by a high-speed car accident Wednesday, August 3rd.
Joel Adames, 31, passed away at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. The other victim, David Fernandez, 40, died at Harlem Hospital after the tragic accident.
The collision took place at a Manhattan intersection. A BMW T-boned a Subararu on 207th street after running a red light on Sherman Avenue. Following this, Adames and Fernandez was struck by the accident.
The graphic surveillance footage showed the two injured men unconscious on the ground as their blood poured onto the street. According to PIX 11 News, Fernandez cut Adames’ hair earlier that evening for a family event happening the next day. After this, the pair had gone for a drink before walking home around 4 am.
The two were beloved members of the Inwood community. David Fernandez was publicly known by his international stage name “David the Dancer”. Fernandez was a winner of many salsa competitions and was also a well-known barber for a handful of A-list celebrities. Robert Gomez, a cousin of Adames told PIX 11 News, “You call him at 2 am, [David Fernandez] would stay open just for you.” He continues, “That’s literally what happen[ed].”
Cardi B was good friends with Joel Adames and honored her late friend in an Instagram story post which read, “Stupidness, negligence, I hope the worst to who committed this! Took someone sooo loved, full of life and just all around amazing leaving people destroy[ed]... RIP JOEL!” The Grammy-Award singer also uploaded a picture of the two men holding their daughters at a birthday party with the caption “Soo hurt for my fams janco and marlaaa y la familia de Joey.”
In addition, the New York Post reported that five other individuals sustained injuries resulting from the accident. The drivers of the Subaru and BMW survived the crash with no serious injuries.
