The former Minnesota officer, Kim Potter, 26, who fatally shot Daunte Wright, 20, during a traffic stop, was charged with second-degree manslaughter. Potter was arrested earlier today (April 14). According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, Wright’s death is considered a homicide.
Potter and Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon resigned on April 13. Gannon said Potter “accidentally” shot her gun and claims she yelled “taser” but pulled the trigger instead. Benjamin Crump and Jeff Storms are representing Wright and said they don’t accept “the police assertion that the deadly confrontation was an accident.” They said,
“An accident is knocking over a glass of milk. It’s not an accident to take your gun out of the holster.” He continued, “It’s not an accident to point your gun. It’s not an accident to ignore the fact that what you’re holding doesn’t weigh the same amount as the Taser you’ve used in training hundreds of times.”
We covered the report; Wright’s parents spoke out yesterday on Good Morning America. The father said he could not believe the shooting was “accidental,” and his mom calls for justice. Wright’s destrot aunt Naisha Wright spoke about Wright’s young son who will grow up without his father.
“He is fatherless, not over a mistake, over a murder,” Naisha Wright shouted. “That’s murder!”
