Gun Violence Spikes Over Holiday Weekend As States Reopen

A surge of gun violence spikes over 4th of July holiday weekend, as states across the country reopen.

According to reports, in Chicago, the holiday weekend leaves 16 people, including a young girl, dead and at least 69 others wounded in shootings. “Multiple fatal shootings were reported across the city early Sunday morning, including in the 1000 block of East 132nd Street. ” According to Chicago police. “Multiple people became involved in an argument with another man before leaving a parking lot and walking into a residence.” Two people were hit, and the 24-year-old man was shot in the left torso, and was later pronounced dead.

Hours after this incident, a total of six people were shot while setting off fireworks. A 20-year-old woman was hit in the head and stomach when a person in a  vehicle began firing shots at the group. She was taken to Mount Sinai, where she was pronounced dead.

In New York, dozens were shot and at least three people were killed during this 4th of July weekend. Reportedly, 40 people were shot across NYC and several people unfortunately passed away. “Between midnight Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday, 39 people were struck by gunfire across every borough except Staten Island, with at least three people killed, sources said.”

During an annual Independence Day celebration, a 23-year-old man was shot in the back on 116th Street near Morningside Park in Harlem, where he was pronounced dead. “You felt safe. It was going so well,” said an attendee. “The only thing they were running from before was the fireworks.”

“You didn’t know where it was coming from because they were running this way and that way,” said the witness. “It’s not the time for this. We were out here minding our own business. … The boy lost his life.”

Unfortunately, the shootings that happened over the weekend is in addition to at least 13 reported stabbings across the city between 4 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday, according to reports.

During a concert in North Carolina, at least 8 people were injured and 2 people dead, after shots rang off. The shooting took place at Lavish Lounge in Greenville, South Carolina. “About 1:50 this morning, two deputies were patrolling this area and had just left a call, [and] saw a large commotion outside the club and heard gunshots,” Sheriff Hobart Lewis told WYFF. “Those two deputies immediately ran inside and it was an active shooter situation and started to try to clear some people out of the way.”
