This is a MAJOR change!
Reuters reports the Minneapolis City Council came to a unanimous decision on Friday (June 12) to replace the Minneapolis Police Department.
Minneapolis will now implement a community-led public safety system. The city council will begin to engage with willing community members in the city to determine what the new public safety model should look like. They expect this process to take one year.
Five council members reportedly said, “the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, by Minneapolis police officers is a tragedy that shows that no amount of reforms will prevent lethal violence and abuse by some members of the Police Department against members of our community, especially Black people and people of color.”
