A white reporter wasn’t happy that Black folks attended the Country Music Award. Patrick Howley said, “There were so many Black people there.” He continued, “Sorry to say, but so many Black celebrities who have nothing to do with country music, and it’s, like, why?” Then he said,
“No disrespect to the funky brothers. I love Earth Wind and Fire, Run DMC, etc. But country music’s different… It’s not Wakanda.”
It didn’t stop there. Then Howley had things to say about Captain American actor Anthony Mackie hosting. He said, “I don’t know who this Black guy who’s hosting it. It’s supposed to be country music. No offense. I mean, y’all have hip-hop and basketball… Just fly with your flock, bro.”

Monica caught wind and aired him out on social media. In a classy yet stern/comical comment, Monica said, “I’ve never been more motivated.. Patrick Howley, although your feelings are likely shared by some, it’s NOT by the masses!” She continued, “I have an all star LEGENDARY team of true country artist that are currently working with me that would beg to differ ! Because of the genuine hearts of @lesliefram1 & @cmt … I shared the stage w/ @jimmieallen & @littlebigtown.” She ended with, “This was the first of many times that you will see me! I see You caught that my skin is melanated, but you missed that it was tough! I’m rooted in the word & built to last ! See you soon, or should I say “Welcome to Wakanda” gracefully bows w/ @anthonymackie.”

Social media showered Monica with love and praised her for how she responded. One person said, “we let the hate motivate.” Lala said “Love you keep shining always,” and Busta Rhymes reminded her she’s a queen, dropping multiple crown emojis. CMT left a supportive comment and said, “WE love you. Your performance at the show with @jimmieallen and @littlebigtown was magical. AND we can’t wait for the new music you have coming soon.”
Monica is gearing up to drop country music. Her country album Open Roads is underway. Monica performed “Pray” with Jimmie Allen and Little Big Town during the CMT awards. We’ll keep you posted when there’s a release date for the album.
