Monday night, Jennifer Lopez reminded everyone of her icon status as she performed a medley of hits at the 2018 VMA Awards and accepted the Video Vanguard Award. Aside from the back-to-back chart-topping hits and secured movie roles the Bronx star has been able to claim, she also is responsible for one other crucial moment: the invention of Google Images.

This story has been confirmed time and time again. Jennifer Lopez’s now infamous 2000 Grammy Awards look, the revealing green Versace dress, brought so much traffic in Google searches that a new feature was born. Google’s executive chairman at the time, Eric Schmidt confirmed in a Project Syndicate article a few years ago himself.

“This first became apparent after the 2000 Grammy Awards, where Jennifer Lopez wore a green dress that, well, caught the world’s attention,” Schmidt said. “At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no sure-fire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: JLo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”

J Lo had a look so iconic that it inspired a Google feature. Now that’s an accomplishment no one else can claim.
