Nicki Minaj has earned a major win.

According to several reports, the U.S District Judge Virginia A. Phillips ruled in favor of Minaj in the Tracy Chapman Copyright Infringement case. Judge Phillips ruled that Minaj “did not commit copyright infringement against Tracy Chapman for her 2017 hit song Sorry.”

She also cited that the song also displays “fair use” of Chapman’s song “Baby Can I Hold You”.  It was reported that Judge Phillips stated the following. “Artists usually experiment with works before seeking licenses from rights holders and rights holders typically ask to see a proposed work before approving a license,” she continued. “A ruling uprooting these common practices would limit creativity and stifle innovation within the music industry.”
