A California mother is furious after her eight-year-old was allegedly forced to urinate in a trashcan after being denied bathroom access.
Sonia Mongol says that a teacher at Manhattan Place Elementary School disallowed her son to visit the restroom in November of 2018. Mongol claimed the teacher “made him urinate in a trash can located at the front of a classroom, exposing himself in front of all of the other students, urinating on himself in the process,” KCAL reports.
According to reports, Mongol’s son was even denied help from the nurses’ office, so a faculty member instructed him to wear garbage bags for the remainder of the day to cover his urine-soaked clothes. Captured in the image below, Mongol said her son was beyond humiliated, and got bullied over the incident.
Moreover, the 8-year old was once again repeatedly denied access to the bathroom this week. He was denied re-entry into his classroom after returning from the bathroom.
A representative for the school district told Inside Edition that they are “alarmed by reports of the events that occurred at Manhattan Place Elementary School.” Continuing, “If true, this alleged behavior by a school employee directly contradicts the mission and values of the Los Angeles Unified School District. We are conducting an administrative investigation in collaboration with law enforcement.”
During a recent press conference, a tearful Sonia Mongo stated, “Children should be able to go to the restroom whenever they have to go. Our child did not deserve this, no child deserves to be treated this way. We are outraged, but this will be used not just to make conditions better for our child but for our children.” She continued, “Why would you make a child expose himself in front of the classroom and then put a garbage bag over him when he came to you for help? Why? Why would you treat a child that way? He’s a kid.”
According to ABC 7, Mongol will attend the next L.A. Unified School District Board meeting to advocate for her son and other children.
L.A. Unified School District told Newsweek: “Los Angeles Unified takes all matters concerning the safety and well-being of our students very seriously. Los Angeles Unified is also conducting an administrative investigation (for child abuse). Due to confidentiality laws, we cannot offer further details at this time.”
The staff member who gave him the trash bags is no longer employed at the school, ABC 7 reported.
Manhattan Place Elementary School and the Los Angeles Police Department have yet to respond.
