Rapper and television mogul 50 Cent is celebrating a major milestone for his production career as the Netflix docuseries “Sean Combs: The Reckoning” secured three nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The project, which was executive produced by the Queens native through his G-Unit Film & Television banner, has solidified its place as a critical success despite initial skepticism from industry insiders and social media critics. The Television Academy announced the nominations Wednesday, recognizing the documentary in three high-profile categories.
The series is in the running for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program, and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program. The recognition comes as a significant win for Netflix, which championed the project even as legal representatives for Sean “Diddy” Combs pushed back against its production.
Taking to Instagram to celebrate the news, 50 Cent, born Curtis Jackson, was quick to address those who doubted the project when it was first announced. He shared a graphic of the nominations with a pointed message for his detractors, noting that while many had negative opinions during the development phase, the industry’s highest honors have now validated the effort. “Everybody had something to say when I announced it… now the Emmys got something to say too,” Jackson said in his social media post.
He accompanied the statement with several laughing emojis, adding that “you can’t argue with the work.” The docuseries explores the complex legal challenges and numerous allegations that have surrounded the Bad Boy Records founder over the past several years. Jackson has been one of the most persistent and vocal critics of Combs, frequently using his massive social media platform to comment on the mogul’s ongoing legal battles and federal investigations.
“Sean Combs: The Reckoning” reportedly drew more than 22 million viewers upon its release, making it one of the most-watched documentary programs on the streaming platform this year.
Jackson’s production company is currently developing several other true crime and biographical projects under his multi-year deal with the streaming giant.
