A$AP Rocky has remained mostly silent throughout his felony trial, appearing in and out of a Los Angeles courthouse each day without comment. But on February 3, he broke that routine with a rare public statement. Instead of addressing his legal battle, he took a moment to congratulate Kendrick Lamar on his historic night at the Grammy Awards.

As Rocky arrived at court, a TMZ reporter asked for his thoughts on Lamar’s Grammy sweep. At first, he seemed ready to keep walking. Then, in a last-minute decision, he turned and simply said, “Congratulations.”

His show of support came as no surprise, given his history with Lamar. The two have collaborated on tracks like “1 Train” and “F**kin’ Problems” and have bonded in recent years over their mutual disdain for Drake. Lamar took shots at Drake on “Like That,” while Rocky followed up on We Don’t Trust You 2 with his own jab on “Show of Hands.”

Despite their competitive space in hip-hop, A$AP Rocky has long admired Lamar’s artistry. In a 2022 interview with Apple Music, he called the Compton rapper “the Nas of our generation” and placed him among his all-time favorites.

“Kendrick and Q are my favorite rappers,” he said. “K. Dot is the man. He knows he’s the man.”

His praise confirms there’s no tension between them, despite Lamar’s dominance at this year’s Grammys. Some fans wondered if Rocky was frustrated after losing in several categories where Lamar won. He fueled speculation by tweeting, “Maybe next time” with a broken heart emoji. But realistically, no one was stopping Lamar that night.

Lamar took home five Grammys, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year—two of the most coveted honors in music. His wins brought his career total to 22, making him one of the most-awarded rappers in history.
