A$AP Rocky and Rihanna’s relationship has captivated fans since they confirmed their romance in 2020. Now parents to two children, the superstar couple is in the spotlight for more than just their family life, as Rocky prepares for his upcoming gun assault trial.During a pretrial hearing on Wednesday, January 15th, courtroom discussions turned to Rihanna when Judge Mark S. Arnold questioned how she should be addressed.
With jury selection scheduled for Tuesday, January 21st, the judge plans to ask potential jurors if they are familiar with either A$AP Rocky or Rihanna, the mother of his children. However, Judge Arnold was uncertain about their marital status and asked Rocky’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, for clarification.
Tacopina wasn’t sure if the two are legally married but referred to Rihanna as Rocky’s “common-law wife.” While the judge was willing to use that term, Deputy District Attorney John Lewin objected, insisting she should only be referred to as his wife if they are officially married.
“If they are legally married anywhere, she will be his wife,” Judge Arnold clarified. “If they are not legally married anywhere, she is his significant other.”
Despite the legal uncertainty, Rocky has often called Rihanna his wife, and their romance has been celebrated, especially since welcoming their sons, RZA Athelston Mayers in May 2022 and Riot Rose Mayers in August 2023.
As the trial approaches, Tacopina revealed that Rocky is considering testifying. “He’s eager to tell his story and would love the opportunity to do so,” Tacopina shared. Prosecutors allege Rocky shot former friend A$AP Relli in 2021, with Relli testifying that Rocky threatened him before firing shots, one grazing his hand. Tacopina remains confident, expressing belief in Rocky’s eventual acquittal.
