Akon is diving into the country music scene, but with a unique twist, he’s planning to re-record his entire catalog with a country spin. While many rappers have experimented with country music, Akon is taking it to a whole new level. Speaking with TMZ Hip Hop in NYC, Akon shared that he has been working on country collaborations for the past five years, and the releases are coming soon.
Akon, who has achieved significant success both as an artist and an executive, believes his country remix project has massive potential. He imagines artists like Morgan Wallen filling in on his hit song “Locked Up” or Jelly Roll joining him on “Smack That.” The possibilities seem endless.
“This has been an idea for years like forever,” Akon said. “The project has been in motion for the last five years. But starting next month, y’all gonna start seeing all the releases.” He explained that while he will be involved, it is the country artists who will perform the tracks, with Akon taking more of a guest role. “They’re country artists featuring me. They’re the ones performing them.” Akon also revealed that these releases will be re-recorded versions of his classic songs, reimagined with a country twist.
The crossover between country and hip-hop is not new. Nelly’s 2004 collaboration with Tim McGraw on “Over and Over” became a hit, and more recently, BigXthaPlug’s duet with Bailey Zimmerman earned him his highest-charting Billboard success. Snoop Dogg is also exploring the country genre with a new gospel album and a recent collaboration with ERNEST. Akon’s venture into country music looks set to continue the trend, blending genres in exciting new ways.
