Eminem celebrated a major personal milestone Monday, marking 18 years of continuous sobriety.
The Instagram post featured the 53-year-old Detroit native holding a bronze medallion etched with the Roman numeral “XVIII,” symbolizing his nearly two decades of commitment to a drug-free life. He captioned the image simply with the numeral and a medal emoji.
Some of Eminem’s peers, including Questlove praised him in the comments. Big Sean also reacted commenting, “yessir keep it up (goat emoji).”
The “Lose Yourself” rapper has been famously transparent about his battle with prescription pill addiction. His journey toward recovery followed a harrowing near-fatal methadone overdose in 2007 that left him hospitalized and facing the reality of his situation. “My drug usage started at the beginning of that first album,” Eminem previously said in an interview with XXL.
He described a shift from casual drinking during battle raps to a heavy reliance on substances as his fame skyrocketed. Industry peers were quick to celebrate the achievement. Fellow Detroit rapper Big Sean and Roots drummer Questlove were among those offering high praise in the comments section of the post. The visual also featured the artist wearing a vintage D-Nice t-shirt, a nod to hip-hop history.
This milestone comes during a particularly significant period for the rapper’s family life. The 15-time Grammy Award winner recently became a grandfather for the second time, marking a quiet shift toward his role as a family patriarch while maintaining his status as one of the best-selling artists of all time. Eminem’s sobriety journey has heavily influenced his discography, particularly on albums like “Relapse” and “Recovery.”
Since entering a 12-step program and getting clean on April 20, 2008, he has frequently used his global platform to advocate for mental health and addiction awareness. The rapper has often credited his children and his passion for exercise as vital components of his long-term success in staying sober.
