As a new father, Big Sean is taking away from his new experience some life-changing lessons. In 2022, he and Jhene Aiko welcomed their son Noah.

During the latest episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty, the Detroit rapper revealed his biggest takeaways from his fatherhood journey.

“It’s like time traveling,” Sean said. “People always try and figure out how to preserve themselves. There’s the expression, ‘Oh, I’m living through my kids.”

“I think that your blood, your lineage…you really do time travel,” he continued.

Sean then spoke about how he looks like his paternal grandfather, who passed when he was a child.

“I never even met him,” Sean Don explained. “But he’s a part of me too, and I think that’s also why it’s important to work on yourself and to heal certain traumatic experiences because, with all this information we pass on, you also pass on the good and the bad. … It is really important to work on yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually because you pass on all of that.”

When Shetty asked what is one thing he would not want to pass on to his son, Sean replied, “Worry.”

I used to…create all of these scenarios in my head, and I think that’s like a double-edged sword—when you have an imagination. You’re creative, you create, right? So, you can create good, you could create bad.”

Big Sean also shared his philosophy of success and being aligned with your purpose.

“One of the things about success is you have to define what your idea of success is. Say somebody had a billion dollars. I wouldn’t say that he’s more successful than me,” Sean explained. “I would just say he has more money than me and I think that’s the power of separation.

“We tie so many things into definition. Success to me is a feeling of, it’s an emotion,” he continued. “It’s something that when your purpose is activated and you are impacting people in any way, shape, or form, there’s so many ways to impact people.”
