Boe Quahh, an 18-year-old drill artist from Brooklyn, was fatally shot on Mother’s Day near the housing complex where he lived, according to police and family members.

The rapper, whose legal name was Quahmir Cruz, was shot in the chest Sunday afternoon on Blake Avenue near Mother Gaston Boulevard, steps from the Van Dyke Houses in Brownsville. Emergency responders transported him to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Family members said Cruz remained conscious after the shooting and repeatedly called out for his younger brother, Daiveon Cruz.

“DaiDai, DaiDai,” he said, using his brother’s nickname.

Daiveon Cruz told mourners he rushed to the scene and helped carry his brother to the ambulance stretcher. “When I found him, I had to carry him and put him on the stretcher,” he said. “That was my best friend. My first friend.”

Hundreds gathered Tuesday for a vigil at the basketball court where Cruz performed as a child. “My heart is broken into pieces,” his mother, Danielle Cruz, said. “I miss him so much. I feel like a piece of me is gone.”

Relatives said Cruz worked in construction and at the Van Dyke Community Center while pursuing his music career. “His dream was to put me and his mom in a mansion,” his stepfather, Shaun Davis, said.

Valerie Barton-Richardson, chief executive of CAMBA, said Cruz was focused on building a future beyond street violence. “Our community, our city and our world will never get to see how brilliant his light would have shined,” she said.

“He was an incredible young man,” Cruz’s grandmother said. “He told me he loved me.”
