Cash Cobain has officially leveled up. Known for carving out the seductive sound of sexy drill in New York, the rapper-producer now finds himself on Justin Bieber’s latest album SWAG, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 163,000 album-equivalent units.
Speaking with Rolling Stone on July 29th, Cash opened up about how their unexpected collaboration came together. It all started when Bieber posted his track “Trippin on a Yacht.” Fans began tagging Cash nonstop, so he followed Bieber and sent him a message saying, “Now we got to work. We got to get something in.” Bieber responded positively, saying, “All right, bet. Definitely got to do it, I f*** with your s***.”
Not long after that exchange, Cash was at Bieber’s house, surrounded by laptops, speakers, and instruments. The two started vibing, working on ideas and trading sounds. “He’s swaggy. He’s been on the swag s*** for a little minute,” Cash said. “But we was talking regular s***, too. We cool. He’d check on me like, ‘I’m just checking on you.’”
Cash was impressed with Bieber’s creative process. “That n***a’s a movie. He was just doing ideas. I never got to really see him really locked in, like, on some Justin Bieber s***. I’m pretty sure that s*** will be fire,” he said.
Eventually, they found a beat that stuck. Bieber reached out to let Cash know he was going to try and get their track on the album. A day or two later, it was out. Their collab landed as track 18 and also features Eddie Benjamin.
Reflecting on the moment, Cash summed it up simply. “Man, who hasn’t been listening to Justin Bieber? Come on, it’s Bieber.”
