After being slapped on the Academy Awards stage in 2022 by Will Smith, Chris Rock might consider being the host of the Oscars again.
Speaking with E! News at the annual Vanity Fair Oscars Party, Rock was asked if he would helm the show in the future.
“You never know. This is what I would say, the most miserable people on earth are people that can’t forgive,” he said in the video below. “And not just people, you have to forgive yourself sometimes. So, hey, you never know.
“I live in forgiveness,” Chris noted. “True love starts at forgiveness.””
During the infamous incident, Smith walked onstage and slapped Rock across the face during Rock’s presentation for Best Documentary Feature. Smith responded to Rock who made fun of Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head because of alopecia.
Smith, the winner of the Best Actor in 2022, would apologize for the incident multiple times and attempted to reach out to Rock.
“I was fogged out by that point. It is all fuzzy. I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk. When he is, he will reach out. I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you,” Smith posted on Instagram in July 2022. “My behavior was unacceptable and I am here whenever you are ready to talk. I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I saw an interview [she] did, and that was one of the things I just didn’t realize. I wasn’t thinking, but how many people got hurt at that moment.”
Because of his action, Smith was banned from the Academy Awards and related events around the ceremony for ten years.
Eventually, Rock responded to “the slap” the following year in his Chris Rock: Selective Outrage special.
“It still hurts! I Got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears,” he said. “But I’m not a victim, baby…I took that hit like [Manny] Pacquiao.”
Chris’ brother Rock said that he’s not over the incident and vowed retribution in a recent stand-up set at Funny Bone in Virginia Beach.
“I can’t leave until I do this last thing on my list of things to do… I have to get Will Smith. Oh yeah. Y’all thought that shit was fucking over? That shit ain’t fucking over,” Tony said. “I’m just laying low right now…”
