Chris Rock recently revealed that he declined to fund the legal defense of a childhood acquaintance who spent nearly two decades behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

In a candid conversation with The New York Times for a segment of “The Interview,” Rock admitted that his personal policy against paying legal fees prevented him from assisting Roger Logan, the brother of one of his closest friends. Logan served 19 years in prison for a murder conviction that was eventually overturned.

Rock explained that while Logan’s brother repeatedly pleaded for financial assistance to secure a private attorney, the comedian remained firm in his refusal. The decision, Rock confessed, continues to weigh heavily on his conscience years later. “I always had like a no lawyer thing because a lawyer is like an open-ended thing,” Rock said during the interview. He noted that while he is often willing to help friends with tangible costs like mortgages or other living expenses, the unpredictable nature of legal billing made him wary of getting involved.

Rock acknowledged that he clearly “had the means to help him” but chose not to, adding that the situation “still messes with me.” The veteran stand-up comic used the story to illustrate a broader point regarding the American justice system and racial perceptions of guilt. Rock argued that Black men are frequently targeted by false accusations, suggesting that there is a cultural divide in how these allegations are processed.

He stated that in his view, “white people believe every accusation is a conviction.” Reflecting on the outcome, Rock expressed uncertainty about whether his financial intervention would have changed the course of Logan’s life. However, the knowledge that an innocent man remained imprisoned while Rock possessed the resources to potentially assist him has left a lasting impact. “I don’t know if we could have got him out or not,” he said.

The interview also touched briefly on other aspects of Rock’s life, including his current stance on the 2022 Oscars incident involving Will Smith. Rock indicated he has moved past the event and has no interest in discussing it further, stating that he has “moved on” and wishes everyone well.
