Olympic sprinter Christian Coleman is speaking publicly in support of Sha’Carri Richardson after her arrest at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport for alleged domestic violence.

Authorities identified Coleman as the victim in the incident, which occurred at a TSA checkpoint and led to Richardson being charged with fourth-degree assault. The case was later dropped, according to multiple reports.

The altercation, reportedly captured on surveillance footage, showed Richardson shoving Coleman as he attempted to walk away. Police said that behavior constituted probable cause for arrest. Richardson was held for nearly 19 hours at SCORE South Correctional Entity. Coleman declined to press charges and asked not to be labeled a victim, factors that contributed to the case’s dismissal.

Speaking to reporters following his appearance at the U.S. Track and Field Championships, Coleman addressed the matter directly. “I don’t feel like she should have been arrested,” he said. “People have emotions, and they have disagreements.”

He described the moment as deeply personal and unfortunate, but emphasized forgiveness and empathy. “I’m the type of guy who’s in the business of extending grace, mercy, and love,” he added.

Coleman, a three-time world champion, also praised Richardson’s athleticism and character. “To me, she’s the best female athlete in the world,” he said, calling her a “great person” deserving of compassion.

Despite the controversy, both athletes competed. Coleman finished fifth in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200 meters, narrowly missing qualification for the upcoming World Championships. Richardson advanced to the finals in the women’s 100-meter dash, clocking 11.07 in the preliminary round.

Richardson has not commented on the incident. The couple, together for two years and publicly linked since February, continues to train and compete under intense public scrutiny. The episode has renewed discussion about the pressures facing elite athletes and the challenges of balancing private lives with high-profile careers.
