Jay-Z left the Roots Picnic with more than applause over the weekend. A freestyle woven into his set quickly became one of the festival’s biggest talking points, sending fans back through lyrics that appeared to address several familiar names. Among those seemingly referenced were Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tory Lanez, and, perhaps most notably, Dame Dash, the former Roc-A-Fella executive whose relationship with Jay-Z has remained complicated for decades. One line, in particular, spread rapidly online: “N****s teeth is tumbling out their mouth, and somehow I’m the one who done it,” Jay-Z rapped.

For many listeners, the lyric appeared to reference a widely discussed livestream moment involving Dash. Whether viewed as a joke, a jab or something in between, the line immediately reignited conversation about a partnership that helped shape modern hip-hop before unraveling in public view. The history between the two men has been revisited countless times through interviews, lawsuits and competing recollections. Even years later, mentions of one often invite responses from the other.

Dash’s reaction arrived in a form that felt entirely in character. Instead of issuing a statement or posting a lengthy video, he uploaded a meme to Instagram depicting Jay-Z as Disney’s Goofy. In the edited image, Jay-Z is shown holding a microphone, but his face has been replaced by the cartoon character. Dash added a laughing emoji and left the image to speak for itself.

Old Tensions, New Attention

The exchange comes at a moment when their names have once again been circulating in the same conversation. Dash recently appeared on The Jason Lee Show, where he reflected on his long-running disputes with Jay-Z and offered fresh criticism of his former business partner. Against that backdrop, some listeners viewed the Roots Picnic freestyle as more than a passing remark.

Whether either side chooses to continue the back-and-forth remains unclear. What is clear is that the story of Roc-A-Fella’s rise and the fractured relationship at its center continues to hold a place in hip-hop’s collective memory. Decades later, even a single lyric or social media post can bring that history rushing back into public view.
