D’Angelo has allegedly passed away at the age of 51, leaving fans and fellow artists stunned. According to journalist Marc Lamont Hill, the R&B icon’s death was reported early Tuesday morning. “My sources tell me that D’Angelo has passed. Wow. I have no words. May he rest in perfect peace,” Hill wrote on X, formerly Twitter. While an official cause has not been confirmed, AllHipHop has reported that the singer allegedly died in New York after a private battle with pancreatic cancer.
Following the news, tributes began pouring in from across the music industry. DJ Premier reflected on their friendship, writing, “Such a sad loss to the passing of D’angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D’ Love You KING.” Producer The Alchemist shared a brief message, “Man. Rest in peace D’ Angelo,” while Tyler, the Creator posted a black-and-white photo of the late star without a caption.
D’Angelo’s influence on soul and R&B music is unmatched. His 1995 debut, Brown Sugar, became a breakthrough hit, remaining on the Billboard 200 chart for 65 weeks and earning platinum certification within a year. The album helped him secure four Grammy nominations and is often credited with helping launch the neo-soul movement. In 2000, he released Voodoo, which debuted at number one and featured the timeless track “Untitled (How Does It Feel).”
After years away from the spotlight, D’Angelo made a triumphant return in 2014 with Black Messiah, a politically charged album that opened at number five on the Billboard 200. Throughout his career, he collaborated with music legends such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Questlove. His artistry, innovation, and soulful sound changed the course of modern R&B forever.
