Delta State University’s De’Martravion “Trey” Reed’s Hanging Ruled A Suicide

Autopsy results have been released in the death of De’Martravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black student discovered hanging from a tree at Delta State University. The Mississippi Medical Examiner’s Office determined his cause of death to be hanging and classified the manner of death as suicide. Toxicology results remain pending.

Reed’s body was found early Monday, September 15, near the university’s pickleball courts. The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office conducted an initial on-site review and reported no signs of foul play. Their findings stated the young man showed no lacerations, contusions, broken bones, or injuries associated with assault.

Yet the family’s attorneys say the official narrative has shifted in troubling ways. Lawyers allege that authorities initially told relatives Reed was found dead inside his dorm room. Vanessa J. Jones, one of the family’s attorneys, said those conflicting reports have only deepened uncertainty.

“The family does not know exactly what happened on Sept. 15,” she said. “We are seeking answers.”

Reed’s grandfather, J.B. Reed, recalled being informed by a Bolivar County deputy that his grandson had died by suicide in his bed.

“He didn’t even say possible suicide,” the elder Reed told reporters. “He said suicide.”

The Cleveland Police Department later confirmed all investigative materials have been turned over to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for federal review. Chief Travis Tribble acknowledged that video evidence exists in the case but withheld further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

“Our thoughts remain with Reed’s family and friends during this very difficult time,” Tribble said in a statement. “We encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help.”

Attorneys representing the family have demanded Delta State release all footage connected to the investigation. They argue transparency is vital for both Reed’s loved ones and the wider campus community. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who recently joined the legal team, underscored the urgency for accountability.

“His family and the campus community deserve a full, independent investigation to uncover the truth about what happened,” Crump said. “We cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain.”

Reed’s death has shaken students, faculty, and residents across Cleveland, Mississippi. The loss of a young life under contested circumstances has reignited debate about transparency in law enforcement investigations, mental health resources for students, and the responsibility of universities to provide clarity in moments of crisis.

For Reed’s family, the search for truth continues.
