Drake’s time in Australia took a dramatic turn when he took the stage in Melbourne and threw shade at his exes—just hours before two of them, Serena Williams and SZA, appeared at the Super Bowl LIX alongside his longtime rival, Kendrick Lamar.
During his “Anita Max Win” tour stop at Rod Laver Arena, Drake vented about former flames who, in his words, “play you in your f***ing life.” He urged the crowd to celebrate if they were doing better than their exes, then launched into “You Broke My Heart,” a track rumored to be aimed at past relationships.
Meanwhile, his exes weren’t dwelling on the past. They were front and center at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, joining one of the biggest nights in sports and music.
Serena, linked to Drake from 2011 to 2015, made a dance-floor cameo during “Not Like Us,” the viral anthem that has fueled Lamar’s feud with the Toronto rapper. Adding to the sting, Kendrick later brought out SZA, another of Drake’s former flames, for performances of “Luther” and “All the Stars.”
The message was clear—Serena and SZA weren’t looking back. With tensions still high, it wouldn’t be surprising if Drake has more to say soon. Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime performance was a multifaceted display of artistry, blending personal narratives with cultural commentary. While some anticipated overt political statements, Lamar chose a more nuanced approach, focusing on personal themes and his well-known rivalry with Drake.
The performance featured tracks from his album “GNX,” including the diss track “Not Like Us,” which is widely interpreted as addressing his feud with Drake. This choice highlighted Lamar’s introspective exploration of personal conflicts and the competitive nature of the music industry.
Lamar’s attire also carried symbolic weight. His choice of a ‘Gloria’ jacket and flare jeans paid homage to cultural icons and eras, subtly weaving historical references into the modern context of the Super Bowl stage. Incorporating guest appearances by SZA, Samuel L. Jackson, and Serena Williams, the performance bridged various facets of entertainment and culture, further enriching its narrative depth.
