Gervonta Davis took to X moments ago, announcing that a rematch with Lamont Roach could happen by late May.
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) insists he’s “pushing for the rematch” following their controversial 12-round majority draw last Saturday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The judges scored the fight 115-113 for Davis, with two 114-114 cards. Many in the boxing world, however, believe Roach was robbed of a clear victory.
A late-May rematch could pose challenges for promoters, who would have little time to finalize negotiations and market the fight. The backlash against Davis has been intense. Fans accuse officials of favoring him, particularly after the referee failed to call a knockdown in the ninth round when he took a knee following a jab from Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs).
Roach wasted no time calling out Davis on social media. “My contract is already signed for an immediate rematch,” he posted on X. “Only reason we don’t fight is because you’re scared.”
He hinted that the fight’s result could be overturned, adding, “Your favorite fighter is going to be 30-1, not 30-0-1… 2X x 2 Division champ.” His comments suggest his team is appealing the outcome to the New York State Athletic Commission.
So far, the commission has remained silent on any potential changes to the official result. If officials reviewed the ninth-round knockdown and ruled it legitimate, Roach could be declared the winner.
Ryan Garcia also weighed in, questioning why the commission hasn’t intervened as it did with his fight against Devin Haney. Last April, Garcia’s victory was overturned and ruled a no-contest after he tested positive for a banned substance.
As speculation swirls, the boxing world awaits word on whether Davis and Roach will meet again in the ring—and whether their first fight’s outcome will stand.
