GloRilla made a major impact at the BET Awards on Monday night, not only hitting the stage with a show-stopping performance but also taking home a major win. The Memphis rapper teamed up with Keyshia Cole for a live rendition of their track “Typa,” with GloRilla also performing her solo song “Let Her Cook.” Wearing a white fur coat, GloRilla kicked things off at a grand piano. When she introduced Cole,who was revealed sitting on top of the piano, the crowd erupted as Cole launched into her 2005 classic, “Love,” which is sampled in “Typa.”
GloRilla also took home the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award. She won for her song “Rain Down on Me,” featuring Kirk Franklin and Maverick City Music. The track appears on her 2024 debut album Glorious. During her acceptance speech, GloRilla expressed deep gratitude for the honor. “It’s a blessing to get the Gospel award first because I owe it all to God,” she said, according to Vibe. “Shout out to Kirk Franklin. I’m not gon lie, I was kind of scared to ask him for a feature on this song because ya’ll know how I be rapping. When he said ‘yes,’ I was so excited, I had this song in the vault for so long.” She also gave thanks to her family and close friends for their support.
Other major winners included Doechii and Kendrick Lamar, who won Best Female and Male Hip Hop Artist, respectively. Lamar also took home Album of the Year for GNX, Best Collaboration for “luther,” and Video of the Year for “Not Like Us.” SZA, his Grand National Tour co-headliner, won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. Future and Metro Boomin were named Best Group. Jamie Foxx received an Ultimate Icon Award. He got emotional as he reflected on his 2023 stroke.
