Studio executives canned Ice Cube’s Last Friday script ideas on several occasions.
In an appearance on Cam Newton’s “Funky Friday” podcast, the hip-hop legend shared what happened to the proposed script. The plot involved new storylines for Deebo, Smokey, and Ezal.
“Like, I know what it needs to be, and they don’t. [The studio] had a named Toby Emmerich for years, and he wouldn’t make the movie,” Cube said.”I was trying to get it made.”
The plot involved Chris Tucker returning as Smokey and it would have been his first appearance in the franchise since the original was released in 1995.
He detailed that Smokey and Day-Day, Mike Epps’ character, are running a dispensary.
“They are in jail ducking Debo, they in jail ducking Damon, they in jail ducking the Joker Brothers,” Cube explained. “Then they get into a rehab.”
“He (Smokey) was taking everybody’s weed and smoking it in the little basement,” he continued.
Amazingly, Ice Cube said that he couldn’t get the film off the ground.
“They were like, ‘Ah, jail’s not funny. It’s too much time in jail. How can you make jail funny?’ I’m like, ‘Man, y’all don’t know what the f*ck yall talking about,’” Cube argued. “Then they come out with “Orange Is The New Black”, “Let’s Go To Prison”, all these movies about that. And I’m like, ‘See? More Hollywood execs don’t know what the f*ck they’re talking about.’”
While Last Friday has not yet come to fruition, Cube’s rap career is still thriving. Recently, Cube released his first solo album in six years, Man Down. The LP is a 19-track collection of songs with Cube at his very best. Guest on the album include Snoop Dogg, E-40, Too Short, Kurupt, Busta Rhymes, Killer Mike, and B-Real.
With his 11th solo album, the Don Mega” debuted at #2 on iTunes’ Hip-Hop/Rap Album Chart.
