Issa Rae has A LOT to celebrate!
According to news sources, Rae inked a new deal with WarnerMedia. The Insecure co-creator will develop TV projects for HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. This agreement gives the networks exclusive rights to Rae’s work in TV. Reports surfaced that Rae signed an eight-figure deal but she said that’s “cap” and would never announce how much she makes.
This is a “full circle” moment for Rae. In 2016, she signed a two-year overall deal with HBO that launched Insecure. In 2018 she renewed the agreement for three more years. The Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award-nominated series will end in the upcoming season five, slated to drop later this year.
Variety reports this deal brings her Hoorae media label in partnership with WarnerMedia, which is another plus. Rae recently told the publication she’s “excited” to have the flexibility and strengthen the relationship she already has with the networks. She said,
“Hoorae already had at least 15 projects in various stages of development with them, so we’d been working with them on the drama side, the unscripted side, and the documentaries side for a couple of years now.” She continued,
“When people believe in you and build with you, I tend to want to further that relationship. That’s just been a staple of mine with so many of the people that I work with.”
Rae is currently filming the fifth and final season of HBO’s comedy series Insecure. Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show was picked up for a second season, and Rae is an executive producer.
Other television projects in the works include the docuseries Seen & Heard, a backyard wrestling drama Tre Cnt (produced with Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions) at HBO. There’s also hip hop comedy Rap Sh*t at HBO Max with the City Girls as executive producers. Hoorae label has a Set It Off remake in the works at New Line, a subsidiary of Warner Bros.)
