JAŸ-Z went viral on Saturday night, May 30, after dropping a new freestyle during his headlining performance at the 2026 Roots Picnic that dissed Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tory Lanez, Damon Dash, Ye, and Texas attorney Tony Buzbee.
The Brooklyn mogul’s rare solo appearance already carried major anticipation. However, it was a pointed freestyle near the start of his set that sent fans racing to social media for answers. Within minutes, clips spread across social media with listeners debating whether JAŸ-Z had taken aim at several of the industry’s most recognizable names.
One of the biggest talking points involved Drake. Fans quickly connected one of Jay-Z’s sharpest bars to recent lyrics from Drake’s album Iceman, fueling speculation that the rap titan was responding directly to the Toronto superstar.
“The jig is up, n****, I’m up 10, wrong chart champ, n**** looked up to Hov, I never looked up to them,” Hov rapped.
The lyric immediately drew comparisons to Drake’s line from “Janice STFU,” where he rapped, “We know how you OGs rockin’ already, my n****, the jig is up.” Neither artist has publicly addressed the apparent connection, but the exchange became one of the festival’s most discussed moments.

JAŸ-Z also sparked conversation with bars that many listeners linked to Nicki Minaj and her husband, Kenneth Petty.
“That lady back on that stuff, she sounds like she’s in love with ’em. Her Ken can’t even pick their kid… enough of them,” he rapped.
He followed with another eyebrow-raising line: “A rapper can’t be my opp, I got MAGA republicans.”
Although Jigga never mentioned Minaj by name, fans immediately interpreted the lyrics as references to the Queens rapper and ongoing public scrutiny surrounding her family.
Another major topic centered on Kanye West, now known as Ye. Given the pair’s history and their landmark collaborative album Watch the Throne, listeners paid close attention when Jay-Z appeared to address recent controversies surrounding his former collaborator.
“You’re no maniac, watch how sane he act in my presence,” Hov rapped.
Moments later, he added, “Y’all thugs with y’all thumbs again. Everybody think they the ones insane.”
Meanwhile, fans speculated that other portions of the freestyle referenced Tory Lanez, Damon Dash and attorney Tony Buzbee. Jay-Z offered no names and provided no additional explanation.
Whether the lyrics were direct shots or broader observations remains unclear. What is certain is that Jay-Z once again demonstrated his ability to dominate hip-hop discourse with a microphone and a few carefully chosen bars.
Days after the Roots Picnic, fans are still dissecting every line.
