Jay-Z’s legal battle with attorney Tony Buzbee continues to ripple beyond the now-dismissed lawsuit that drew national attention last year. In 2024, Buzbee filed a civil complaint alleging that Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl after a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards afterparty. Jay-Z rejected the allegations almost immediately, calling them “blackmail.” The case ultimately came to a close when the accuser, identified in court filings as Jane Doe, withdrew her claims. As a result, this led to a dismissal with prejudice.

Roc Nation responded to that outcome with a statement that left little doubt about its position. “Today is a victory. The frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations have been dismissed,” the company said at the time. Even so, the legal friction surrounding Jay-Z and Buzbee did not disappear with that ruling. Instead, it shifted into a separate dispute involving allegations connected to former clients of the Texas attorney.

The next chapter began in late 2024, when Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s legal counsel at Quinn Emanuel, and attorney Marcy Croft became defendants in another civil action. Gerardo Garcia, Jose Maldonado, and the Buzbee Law Firm alleged that intimidation and bribery influenced lawsuits that had been brought against Buzbee. Garcia, who previously worked with the attorney as a client, claimed he personally experienced that alleged pressure.

The Texas litigation ends as Jay-Z’s momentum continues to build

That case recently encountered a significant obstacle. According to Complex, Judge Kristen Hawkins dismissed the Texas-filed lawsuits after determining the court did not have jurisdiction to hear the matter. While the ruling does not prevent the claims from being refiled elsewhere, it brings the Texas proceedings to an end. Therefore, any future litigation is dependent on a different venue.

For Jay-Z and Roc Nation, the decision represents another favorable development in a year already filled with public milestones. The rapper is preparing for upcoming performances in New York, Paris, and Los Angeles. Meanwhile, continued discussion surrounding his Roots Picnic freestyle has fueled speculation about whether new music could arrive before the year is over.
