Kendrick Lamar stunned audiences last week with the sudden release of his new album, GNX, dropping with no prior warming and sending social media into a frenzy. The project covers a range of topics fans have long anticipated hearing his perspective on, including his upcoming Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performance in Louisiana—a gig announced in September.
The news, however, sparked controversy, as many critics argued that the slot should have gone to New Orleans’ own Lil Wayne.
Amid the backlash, Wayne took to social media to express his frustration over the perceived rejection, revealing how deeply it affected him. He admitted, “That hurt, it hurt a lot… I thought there was nothing better than that spot, on that stage, on that platform.” “It broke me, but I’m just trying to put myself back together.” K.Dot however, seemed less than sympathetic, addressing the fallout head-on in his track “wacced out murals.”
Wayne’s Diss Track Follows Unanswered Call to Kendrick, Says Budden
Lamar’s lyrics stated, “Used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud/ Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.” “Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me.”
Nonetheless, Joe Budden recently revealed that Wayne reached out to Lamar after hearing the track, but when he didn’t return his call, the rapper reportedly opted for another route. He voiced, “I’m hearing that somebody picked up the phone, tried to call and see what the energy was, I’m hearing that Kendrick didn’t answer.” “I’m hearing that Wayne went in the booth.”
Budden and his co-hosts delved into a heated discussion about Wayne’s potential matchup with Lamar, especially given the recent momentum the Compton native has gained. However, whether the rumored diss-track will ever surface—and if it does, what impact it will have—remains to be seen.
