Joey Bada$$ is calling out his label, Columbia Records, for delaying the release of his upcoming album Lonely at the Top, and he’s not holding back. Frustrated and furious, the rapper let loose on Instagram, accusing the label of getting in the way and stalling a project that he says has been done for over a month.
The Raising Kanan star didn’t mince words. “I’m signed to Columbia Records, but for the longest time I just ain’t been f***ing with them,” he said. “All they do is get in my way.” According to Joey, this isn’t a matter of sample clearance, features, or competing release dates. The album is ready, it’s Columbia that’s dragging their feet.
Joey admitted he prematurely announced the August 1st release date because he was tired of waiting. “I’ma just rip the Band-Aid off,” he told fans. “Bad news… the album is not dropping on Friday. The album is not dropping Aug. 1st. Yep. I said it. I’m f***ing sorry. I’m ashamed, I’m f***ing disappointed.” He added, “This time it’s not my fault… My s**t got pushed back because the label pushed my s**t back.”
Joey’s anger boiled over in a profanity-laced Instagram rant that even included an obscene gesture toward Columbia. He emphasized that all of his recent music has been released independently on YouTube because he refuses to let the label slow him down. “I’m way too f**king independent-minded and self-sufficient to sit around and wait for people who is not getting in line with the vision,” he said.
Feeling like he’s constantly battling behind the scenes, Joey says he can’t even promise a new release date. “This is such a bad representation of the new energy I’m on… at this moment in time I can’t even give y’all a date.”
