Joey Bada$$ has been named Artist-in-Residence at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, the youngest ever appointed to the position in the school’s history.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, the 29-year-old Brooklyn native expressed his excitement with a photo of the Variety article, captioned: “Class in session [Graduation cap emoji].”

In a released statement, Joey said, “I’m honored and humbled to be invited as Artist-in-Residence at the Clive Davis Institute. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the students, and I’m certain I’ll learn a lot from them as well. Building community across sectors is important to me, and this is another beautiful step in that journey.”

Artist-In-Residence encompasses a wide spectrum of artistic programs that involve collaboration between artists and hosting organizations, institutions, or communities. The entertainer follows previous legends to hold the position, including Pharrell Williams, Dawn Richard, Corinne Bailey Rae, Swizz Beatz, and Jack Antonoff.

“We are thrilled to host Joey,” followed Nicholas Sansano, chair of the Clive Davis Institute. “The current economic model of the music industry doesn’t allow most creatives to rely on just one discipline for income or relevance. Joey, as a multitalented performer, songwriter, actor, and advocate, can share his personal insights into that reality. More importantly, his commitment to mentorship and wellness for young professionals is crucial, especially for our students to witness firsthand.”

Joey Bada$$ achieved fame at the peak of the Blog Era in 2012 with his debut mixtape, 1999. Throughout his career, he has evolved into a highly respected lyricist and actor. He stars in Power Book III: Raising Kanan. A community leader, he founded ImpactMENtorship, a program that offers free mentorship to men of color, in 2023.

Joey was signed to Columbia Records in 2022 and released the single “Tell Me” featuring Chlöe last week, marking his return to music.
