Kerry Washington is the latest inductee into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The ceremony took place on December 2 (Monday) in Hollywood where Washington received her star in the category of Television.
Shonda Rhimes, creator of Scandal was on hand to speak about Washington’s impact on the industry.
“(Kerry) is strong. You’re determined. You’re never compromising in your values and you’re always holding onto who you are, despite all of this crazy attention,” Rhimes said. “She’s a born leader. …She’s passionate about the roles she plays, about her philanthropy, about her activism, about the world. And she is passionate about her family.”
Tyler Perry joked that Washington’s daughter walked just like her.
“So as she was walking back to the room, the baby’s walking in front of us because her diaper on,” Perry said.”And I’m looking at her, and I’m like, I said, ‘Kerry, she’s walking like Olivia Pope,” he continued.
In her acceptance speech, Washington spoke about how her parents inspired her.
“My mom and dad also taught me to dream. They taught me to believe and to pursue, and so here we are. Mom, Dad, can you believe it? An actual star,” Washington said.”You made a wish and it came true…And now I am swirling in a galaxy of other stars, all encouraging each other to shine brightly and to light the way for somebody else’s dreams.”
She also thanked her legion of fans for their support throughout her career.
“So many of you are part of how I got here. My prayer today is that my starlight continues to connect me to that light that shines on each of you,” she said.
Washington is an Emmy-winning producer, SAG and Golden Globe-nominated actor, New York Times bestselling author, and political activist.
From 2012–2018, she starred as Olivia Pope in the ABC drama Scandal. For her role, she earned two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. She broke barriers as the first black woman since 1974 to headline a network TV drama.
Washington also received Emmy nominations for playing Anita Hill in the HBO film Confirmation and for Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu.
In film, she’s starred in Ray, The Last King of Scotland, I Think I Love My Wife, For Colored Girls), Django Unchained, and many more.
